Artist Statement

It is my intention that the viewer has a sense of the sublime when contemplating my work, a visual experience which arouses the spiritual and mystical curiosity. Scale is my first point of reference. I select a large surface which evokes a feeling of something greater than myself and draws me in with a kind of magnetism.

I choose to Work on an absorbent ground, whose nature instantly absorbs the thinly applied layers of earth pigment, and hand carved markings, resembling something natural taken from the ground. Through an extensive process of layering raw materials, such as plaster, wax and lacquers, the surface emulates something brought about by the natural changes of time which can be identified by a web of scratches, grooves and pebble smooth edges.

My works are both carefully planned and exposed to chance. Washes of colour settle in the textured relief and collect in puddles highlighting details which would otherwise be barely visible. Whilst using carefully mapped out lines and circles inspired by the most ancient and simple forms of symbolism drawn from global culture and primitive artwork and relics, where I imagine the makers were driven by the awe inspiring laws of nature, of which they had limited understanding, yet the utmost respect, influencing their daily lives and belief systems.

Through these deep, inviting surfaces, caused by the building up and stripping back of layers, it is my aim to create something which absorbs and compresses time, achieving a completed form of other worldly appearance intended to draw the viewer on a deeper level, extending the imagination.

Richard Hoey- Born Cheshire England 1968.
